cyanyde:

I went vintage shopping for my birthday!!! I managed to find a dress from the 60’s, one from the 70’s and one from the 80’s. That is NEVER going to happen EVER again.

This is one of the outfits that came out of it… that I incidentally wore to a baby shower. Almost ironic, but not quite.

1 80’s Vintage St. John dress in fuchsia from Vintage Revenge in Cambridge

1 pair of Rounded Diamond Fishnet tights from American Apparel (I already had them)

1 pair of the best badass boots ever (by that I mean Dr. Martens Paratrooper Warner Pro Boot) from Hootenanny in Cambridge (Happy birthday present to me!)

1 pyramid studded belt (who knows where I picked that up…)

4 items of awesome-dawesome-duck-sauce caliber coming together to make a pretty cool look. Can we say yes? Chyeaaaaa ;)

As a badass hijabi (read: Muslim woman who wears a headscarf), every day I have to pick an additional piece of clothing, my scarf, to go along with what I happen to be wearing.

Now, as an incredibly lazy person, that means I usually don’t give it more than 2 thoughts: what’s clean and what’s in the same color family? Further, to me the scarf is a marker of my faith and a big “fuck you” to all the sensationalist, exoticized, and demeaning portrayals of Muslim woman — not a fashion statement.

But there are so many Muslim sisters, probably the majority, (including my fabulous sister) who take their hijabs as fashion much more seriously.  And instead of only being a loaded statement, it become a true accessory, one beautiful peice that compliments their whole outfit.

Check out these photos of some beautiful hijabis, using the scarf in all kinds of ways!

Hey all you 4CC fans!

So this was supposed to be our Halloween post. All of us had ideas of grandeur (Cyanyde as Pam Grier in Coffy, 80M as Rosie the Riveter and Mo’Threads as Björk) but life happened. We know, we know… womp womp. We might do a dress up day to make up for it.

BUT we are proud to say that our very own EvieB got her party on enough to make up for the rest of us. Check out her oh-so-on-time rendition of Kanye West’s Runaway Phoenix and give her props! The girl had vision and pulled it of spectacularly.

Sayonara ‘til next time!

evieb:

Happy belated Halloween everyone.

usually my goal for my costume is to look hot, and semi slutty so I always buy one of the generic costumes like sexy firefighter or sultry pirate.  this year i was planning on doing the same and i bought a princess jasmine costume to fit in with my friends Disney princess theme.  but sadly i slacked on my ab work for the whole month and showing my stomach was out of the question.

a week before Halloween Kanye West premiered his new video (short film) for Runaway and i immediately fell in love with the Phoenix character.  She’s beautiful!!! the makeup, the feathers, the colors, i knew i had to try it.  i hit the garment district on a Monday and went crazy buying feathers, chains, tulle, spandex, and so forth.  over 3 days and with some crucial advice from Cynade i created my own Phoenix version.  it ended up being quite a project and a lot more expensive then any costume i could’ve bought at Ricky’s, but it was totally worth it.  i was the belle of the ball (or the club), lot’s of random people stopped me for pictures, the DJ gave me a shout out, and not to mention that i looked freaking HOTT!!!!! (not to sound conceited or anything).

if you want to create your own you’ll need:

* nude bodysuit from American Apparel : $26

* feathers: $100 worth

* stretchy band material or a head band: $5

* 8 feet of gold chain: $40

* feather lashes: $8

* 1 foot of tulle (for the tail feathers): $7

* gold  or nude shoes: (mine were from steve madden)

* a glue gun, fabric glue, safety pins, and fabric paint

* i got my makeup done by MAC, but to get the effect you’ll need white eyeshadow, lots of brown tones for contrast, face shimmer, and nude lipstick.

Fashion by Numbers

Numbers tell interesting stories.  Here’s my story by numbers with a particular focus on my current fashion situation:

9-1-10:  The date that I began my “apparel diet” (no shopping for clothes for one year).  See the real deal: The Great American Apparel Diet
10: Months left to conquer.
59: Days of success.
6: The number of bags of clothing that I gave away after cleaning out my closet.
4: The number of months it took to finally get rid of all those bags of clothes.
2: Friends that have also made similar choices to consume less.
4: The number of blocks from my apartment to the subway.
6: The number of clothing stores that I pass on my way to the subway - twice a day, everyday - Urban Outfitters, Banana Republic, Gap, The Loft, H&M, and Victoria’s Secret.
1: Fails to date. I bought a shirt while on vacation in Florida at the outlet mall - the absolute worst place to be when you are on a clothing diet.
2.52: The cost of that shirt.  Less than your average Starbuck’s latte…
10: Pairs of jeans in my closet - a few date back to college…
110: The price I was willing to pay for a pair of jeans in 2004.  And did, quite a few times.
40: What I now think is reasonable to pay for a pair of jeans.
1,881: Average spent on clothing per year (per household) in 2009.
23: The average number of emails that I receive from clothing companies a week informing me about new sales and products.
5: Average number of clothing catalogs I receive a month.
9: Number of fashionable co-workers (ALL of the women in my office).
21.78: Price of my last purchase - scarf (accessory - not clothing).
365: “New” ways to wear what I have in my closet… and counting.

What’s your fashion story by numbers?   Please share : )

evieb:

so i organized my closet the other day and i counted 65 dresses, almost all purchased within the last 2 years.  ok some of you might be thinking, wow that’s excessive, but here’s the thing: I HATE wearing the same dress more than 1 time (maybe twice if I really love it).  i know, i know, it’s incredibly wasteful, but i can’t help it, part of the fun of clubbing or going out to events for me is the getting all cute and premiering a new dress.  now don’t worry, my dresses get plenty of uses from my sister, friends, and teen girls in Guatemala after my mom visits.

if you read my bio then you know i love anything tightttt, short, shiny, or black.  my newest obsession this year is cut outs, shear spots, one shoulder, and leopard (but thats a lifelong obsession).  i can’t get enough of them.  the dresses in the slide show are some dresses i’ll probably buy within the next week.

if you seeing these pics and your not thinking “what the hell? where would you wear that to?” then check out the links below and buy your own.  trust me you’ll feel the love in the club, or wherever you wear them to ;)

cyanyde:

Cyanyde’s DIY fashion Guide: Cheapo Keychains -> Dopetastic Earrings in 5 easy-peasy steps.

Step 1: Obtain 2 glow in the dark Virgin Mary keychains from tourista store in San Francisco.

Step 2: Cut off the 2nd to last jump ring with mini wire cutters.

Step 3: Break out 2 jump rings and 2 ear wires.

Step 4: Use your pliers to open the jump ring connect it and an ear wire to each base.

Step 5: Use the pliers again to close them up and you’re all done.

*Note, these are pretty heavy so I’d suggest starting out with a lighter, thinner, cheaper keychain (though I can’t guarantee their Our Lady glow in the dark awesomeability)

Hasta!

1909-11, Evening Dress
The Edwardian era is my favorite. Nestled between the greatness of the Victorian era and the catastrophe of the Great War, it makes me nostalgic. For what, I don’t always know. But this dress is a beauty.
I want to languidly recline on a suitably elegant couch in this dress, one hand held in a lazy and affected pose while the other RUMMAGES AROUND IN A COOKIE JAR. Or a tin of tuiles, idk.

darling80m:

This was close, very close. But the 4CC Dream Date is Donald Glover, the man with so many damn talents, remember? Sorry George and Joseph, maybe another night.

So, I did it. I found the boy (thanks for your help!). He’s pretty, he dresses like a cross between a grandpa and a thug, and he talks like a sailor with the brains of Einstein.

The Activities:

After we both get out of work (did I mention, he does everything?!), we meet up at the location of one of my most treasured dates,  Holy Basil (149 Second Ave, between 10th and 9th) and get a table near the window.

We’ll enjoy

  • the dim ambiance and
  • the fancy-schmancy plating;
  • how good everything tastes and
  • the fact that everything does not cost twenty-five thousand dollars.
  • Plus, we both look better in candlelight.

Holy Basil is the perfect setting for dissecting the importance of sketch comedy in post-modern New York or the manic-depressive tendencies of our favorite president, Abe Lincoln.

Once we’ve digested our vegetable curries and duck-skin rolls, we’ll have chocolate pizza for desert. When we’re done ruining our teeth, we’ll walk over to his place and finish this date off. Of course, the whole date is set to the Yeasayer remix of “Dog Days Are Over”. I don’t know why, it just is.

The Clothes:

Donald - I never thought about it much before, but I think I prefer men getting dressed up. In a suit, you know, maybe with a bow-tie. Maybe. In this case, yes. He’s such a slim boy, it will all come together.

Me - Women, however, why do we need to always get dressed up? I’ve never been a fan of it and because I am the most boring and safe dresser ever, I have to stay true to my heart and rock some worn out jeans. To show I care, I’ll throw in the “Romantic Novel” blouse, which I love. And also, because I want this date to end like a romance novel begins.
